Ambiguity part 1
Trust the Japanese to have one phrase that could mean both "Appropriate"/"Suitable" and "Anyhow"/"Random".
That word is 「適当に」
So... do you want me to change the value appropriately, or randomly?

Perhaps you should change the value randomly appropriately? Gosh, I'm confused too! :-D
That was what first crossed my mind. There must be a 'cultural' nuance here somewhere.
another word is ”無理”
it can mean "impossible" or it can mean "unreasonable", depending on context.
At least that one both has the nuance of "can't be/hard to accomplish".
When one complete sentence (適当に物を選択する) can have the nuance of either:
"select a specific thing" or "select a random thing", it is a potential mischief generator ('ω')ο
