All righty then!
I fnally managed to clear all my backlogs! (Including the extra work from freelance translations)
There is still at least 2 new projects coming my way, but for the moment (this week anyway), I am free!
And so the memory of GAMECON 1 i still fresh in my mind.
On the first day, I got up pretty early and made my way to the restaurant. It was surprisingly quite empty (at 8.00am), and I managed to get myself comfortably seated pretty quickly. The food was great, and looking back, I should have smuggled some crossiants out to snack on as I got so busy during the event itself that I did not manage to get proper lunches and dinners! (Volunteers who dissapeared to play games during their shift did not help.)
We were among the first few people to turn up at the venue, and as there were no one around to guide us to our section, we spent quite sometime wandering about, and trying to find our boardgame boxes. On top of that, it seems that the arangement was again changed at the last minute, and our billboard was misplaced somewhere in the big hall.
In the end, we took things into our own hands, found the billboard, and requisited extra chairs and extra tables by ourselves instead of waiting. Finally everything was set up (and I got to play on the giant Palazzo Paletti once!) and we waited in anticipation. Once the doors were open to the public, there was hardly enough time to think too much.
We was supposed to work in 2 shifts of 3 hours each, but most of the volunteers from Singapore ended up "working" for most of the 12 hours, me included of course. I had a lot of fun teaching the games that I was assigned to, played with the people if they have not enough players, and in general keeping an eye out so that all the game components stayed where they are supposed to be - on the table.
During my break time, I wandered over to the tables just next to our section and helped to teach a game of "Settlers of Cattan", and managed to play 2-3 games of "Through the Desert". I also attempted to purchase some Magic Land cards from Ravinca, but unfortunately, they were already going for like 60 Ringgits each! Bummer...
I also had a nice conversation with a mother whose son is joining the Warhammer 40k tournament. She initially thought that she would have to be bored out of her mind until she found out about our boardgaming section. Unfortunately I did not get to teach her any games. (I saw her photo though, she must have came back during my lunch break.)
Time passed really fast when you're gaming. I managed to grab some traditional cakes backstage for tea, but by 10 pm, my stomach was grumbling. Luckily, there was one Roast Chicken store that was still open. I got myself a set meal that consisted of 1/2 chicken, fries, vegetables and garlic bread for only 6 ringgit! Plus a big bottle of green tea from the supermarket.
Retiring to my room, I turned on the tv and munched while watching "Around the World in 80 days", starring Jackie Chan! A perfect end to a perfect day.
